How to Obtain an Afghan Tourist Visa
Afghanistan is steadily growing in popularity among international tourists, drawn to its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and cultural significance as a crossroads of civilizations. However, obtaining a visa to travel to Afghanistan can be more complex than for other destinations. Knowing the process and requirements beforehand will help ensure a smooth journey.
This guide provides everything you need to know about obtaining an Afghan tourist visa, including where to apply, required documentation, and key tips to streamline the process.
Do You Need a Visa to Travel to Afghanistan?
Yes, all foreign nationals require a valid Afghan Tourist Visa to enter Afghanistan. Visa-on-arrival and e-visa services are currently not available, so you must secure your visa in advance through an Afghan consulate or embassy.
Where Can You Apply for an Afghan Tourist Visa?
Afghan tourist visas must be obtained in person at specific consulates or embassies. As of June 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that visas issued by embassies operating under the previous republic government (primarily in Europe and the USA) will no longer be valid. To ensure your visa is accepted, you must apply at consulates or embassies under the current administration.
Locations currently issuing valid Afghan tourist visas include:
Dubai, UAE
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Peshawar, Pakistan
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Istanbul, Türkiye
What Documents Do You Need?
Each consulate may have slightly different requirements, but we recommend preparing the following:
Letter of Invitation (provided by your host or tour agency)
Copy of Your Host’s Tazkera (Afghan National ID)
Two Color Copies of Your Passport
Two Passport Photos (Keep an additional two photos for registration at Kabul airport.)
Marriage Certificate (if traveling as a mixed couple)
Payment for the Visa Fee

Visa fees vary depending on where you apply:
Dubai, UAE: $130–$220 USD (varies by nationality)
Abu Dhabi, UAE: $130–$220 USD
Peshawar, Pakistan: Approximately $100 USD
How Long Does the Process Take?
The Afghan tourist visa is typically issued on the same day if all required documents are in order.
