FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • You may be wondering, "Is it safe to travel to Afghanistan?". The intense conflict that persisted for the past twenty years subsided in August 2021. While Afghanistan is in the process of recovering from the effects of war, it's important to note that the country as a whole is no longer an active battle zone as it has been for decades. According to conversations with local people, Afghanistan is currently experiencing a level of calmness that hasn't been seen in a long time.

Our own experiences travelling throughout the entire eastern part of the country have been without security threats, concerns, or incidents, and we are not alone in this regard. Tourism is actively encouraged, and foreigners are generally well-received by the local population. While challenges and risks may still exist, Afghanistan is evolving into a more stable and welcoming destination for travelers seeking unique and enriching experiences.

  • Indeed, the social, professional, and economic lives of Afghan women have faced significant challenges since 2021. It's essential to understand that the policies and restrictions imposed on local Afghan women do not typically extend to guests and visitors, especially foreign women or women holding foreign passports travelling with family or in groups.

Tourists who are women will generally have the opportunity to explore Afghanistan as men do, with some occasional exceptions. These exceptions might include situations where women cannot participate in public swimming or sit with an all-male crowd. Likewise, there may be unique cultural experiences that male participants cannot partake in, particularly those involving interactions with local women. Our aim is to provide a respectful and culturally sensitive travel experience for all our guests, ensuring that everyone can make the most of their journey while adhering to local customs and norms.

  • For travellers who were not born in Afghanistan, obtaining a visa is a necessary step for your journey. • Afghans are renowned for their hospitality and deep respect for their guests. In Afghanistan, a culturally conservative and Islamic country, there are specific customs and etiquettes to observe for a more enjoyable experience.

As guests, we encourage you to approach your visit with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the local way of life. It's crucial to be aware that both men and women visitors are expected to adhere to the Islamic dress code while in Afghanistan.

Upon your arrival in Kabul, one of your first activities will be to have local clothing tailored for you. For men, this typically involves the traditional peran-tumban\kamis-partoog, consisting of long dress shirts and loose pants. Women are encouraged to come prepared with long, modest dresses or an abaya and a headscarf, and you will have the opportunity to shop for additional attire in Kabul as well. Respecting these cultural norms will enhance your interactions with locals and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the Afghan experience.

  • Infrastructure

It's important to be aware that Afghanistan's infrastructure is basic, and certain amenities that travelers may be accustomed to in more developed countries may not always be readily available. In some areas, running hot water can be scarce, and accommodations may offer bucket showers as an alternative (a bucket of water and a method to pour it over yourself). Squat toilets are commonly found, and toilet paper may not be readily available.

    Hygiene

Hygiene standards in Afghanistan can be challenging, and it's essential to be prepared for varying conditions during your journey. While the hotels and guesthouses we have chosen prioritize cleanliness and comfort, it's possible that you may encounter restrooms in less-than-ideal states while traveling.

    Foodborne Illnesses

Similarly, food safety can sometimes be a concern, and it's not uncommon for travelers to experience upset stomachs. Rest assured, we will make every effort to locate clean and safe food options. Please be aware that stomach discomfort is a common side effect of traveling in this region, and with the right precautions and care, you can still have a rewarding and memorable experience in Afghanistan.

These challenges are typical when traveling in a developing country and adapting to local conditions is part of the adventure. It's essential to keep an open mind and come prepared with essentials like hand sanitizer to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey.
